Then that chill momentum is ruined by "Fuck an Emcee Name", but I already talked about that. Rafael Casal also doesn't contribute much lyrically but he sounds nice on the hook. Meanwhile, the latter track isn't mean, just kinda corny, as Watsky delivers bars that just kinda mean nothing. This isn't the only song that does this, but the songs that do this contrast a lot with the more self-conscious-sounding songs. The lyrics here are also really mean for some reason. However, it's not like these songs are really that good in the larger scope, the former track has these very spacey vocals which are meant to sound like the world being noise-cancelled around you but it ends up making the vocals feel demo-quality. ![]() The first two cuts, "Headphones" and "Amplified", share a very lowkey vibe on the production end and are both pretty alright, to the point where if this whole album went in that direction for the instrumentals on this album, I would've been alright with that. However, as I said, beyond those serious hiccups, there is some slight merit to a few of these tracks. This may be one of the most tragic failures of trying to make a racial statement about hip hop to the point that I just don't want to talk about it, though as a fun easter egg, if you check the Genius page for this song, you'll see that apparently this song's feature, Catch Wreck, has beef with Watsky because he was removed off of a song on his next album, and I just find that entire situation hilarious. I can't imagine this helps anyone with this issue, but the tragedy of that song pales in comparison to the disaster that is "Color Lines". Like, he deadass wrote a whole song about being nervous during sex, which I'm not here to dunk on anyone who has this issue, but this song is not even a worthy anthem for those who might relate with the concept, as Watsky spends the whole track delivering corny lines about how weird and nervous he feels mixed with some lines that in this context just feel perverted about what he would do if he didn't have this issue. There's also "Waking Hour", a song about not being able to get it on in bed. ![]() Sometimes every aspect though would go out the window, which is how you end up with messes such as "Fuck an Emcee Name", which has this awful, synth-heavy beat, a topic that was already a bit odd to really dedicate a whole song to, lyrics that just seemed irrationally upset at people who have stage names, along with a whiny hook and an unnecessarily long and miserable outro. The real issue with *Watsky* is that essentially every single aspect that went into making a track, with the exception of the mixes, which were a bit rough around the edges at times but overall they were good, were pretty hit-and-miss on execution, with the misses much more impactful than the hits. At this point in time, George Watsky was not much more than a poet who I'm guessing took an interest in rapping and that's how we got this project, and while I don't think that a lack of prior releases is necessarily an impossible hurdle to clear to make decent music, it certainly felt like Watsky lacked the right people to help him make this album any good. Talk about guilty pleasures!0.There is not much to say about Watsky's self-titled 2009 debut album. I love this song now!!!!
